The Cost Of: General Contractors and Construction Fees You Should Look Out For

Rob Reich Jr.

When considering home renovations, or any project, it is always best to know the details upfront. By knowing what you are getting into and how much service providers cost, having renovations done can be fun and less stressful. The general contractor fees you should look out for depend on what type of renovation work you want to be done.

Here are some questions to ask your contractor in order to get a better idea of what you will be paying.

How much do you charge for your services?

Remodeling contractors are typically paid by the hour, however, some contractors who are more well known may offer flat rates on certain projects. It is important to note that charging an hourly fee gives the contractor the flexibility to work at their own pace.

Are you required to get a permit? If so, do you have a general contractor who will submit the paperwork on my behalf?

When a contractor is completing a renovation or remodel it would be in your best interest to have them apply for any necessary permits. This way you can be sure that all the building codes and safety regulations are followed, which can protect you if something were to go wrong. If a general contractor is not required for the renovation but they do have a license it would be best to get them to apply for any necessary permits on your behalf.

What type of supplies will I need? Are these included in your general contractor fees?

Remodels and renovations typically require a lot of tools and materials to get the job done. If your contractor does not supply you with what is needed then it would be best to factor in additional costs. In some cases, a general contractor may include supplies in their fees, but make sure to ask them about this specific detail before agreeing on their services.

When is the best time to have renovations done? Will my renovation general contractor need access to my home during certain hours of the day?

It would be in your best interest to have any type of construction taking place when you are not at home. This way, you will not have to worry about being displaced or experiencing any disruptions to your life. Also, some general contractors may need access to your home during specific hours of the day in order to get the job done quickly and effectively.

Talk with a contractor about what time is best for you to have renovations done so that both parties are on the same page.

Is there anything else I should know?

At the end of your discussion feel free to ask any other questions you might have. This way, you can be confident that you are getting all the information needed for effective renovations.
